On August 26th, 2008, college sophomore Rebecca Michelle "Becca" Kearney was diagnosed with a life threatening blood cancer called Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (A.L.L.).  She had to put life, as she had known it, on hold.

In the fall of 2008, Becca's doctors used a five month regimen of Chemotherapy to get her white blood cell counts down to their normal level.   The chemo was a success, and Becca went into remission.  In February 2009, Becca had a stem-cell transplant, the goal of which was to KEEP the cancer in remission by altering the ‘mutant' DNA that the doctors believed was the cause of her cancer.

Becca survived the transplant and, a few weeks later, was allowed to leave the hospital.  She contracted an infection in her catheter port only a few days out of the hospital.  Once back in the hospital, the doctors determined that Becca had gut versus host disease which meant that her body was rejecting the transplant donor's bone marrow.  Over the next few months, Becca fought some incredibly difficult physical battles.  Her liver and kidneys were failing, and her blood pressure was dropping, but her spirit and her will to live remained strong.

Tragically, this beautiful, vivacious twenty year old was not able to return to her sophomore year at her beloved Lynchburg College.  On July 23, 2008, Becca passed away.

The costs of treating and curing A.L.L. are staggering.  Although insurance will cover MOST of the costs, it will fall $20,000 to $40,000 short of the total.

Team Becca is a foundation formed in response to the many offers of financial support from not only Becca's wonderful friends and family, but also from the friends of  friends who have been so kind to reach out to Becca and her family.

Thank you for your commitment to helping in the fight against leukemia and cancer.

All proceeds collected by Team Becca are used to satisfy medical expenses incurred by Becca that were not covered by insurance.  In the unlikely event that any proceeds are left over after all claims are paid, 100% of the balance will be sent directly to the VCU Massey Cancer Center.  Team Becca is operated entirely by volunteers outside of Becca's family who receive no compensation for their work.
